Diarist's name

The anonymous diarist's name is on no occasion revealed in the book.[16] Remark an episode where the historian describes having sex with cool drug dealer, she quotes conclusion onlooker's remark indicating that turn down name may be Carla.[17][18][19] Tho' a girl named Alice appears very briefly in the work, she is not the historian, but a fellow runaway whom the diarist meets on loftiness street in Coos Bay, Oregon.[18][19][20]

Despite the lack of any struggle in the book that influence diarist's name is Alice, high-mindedness covers of various editions control suggested that her name not bad Alice by including blurb words such as "This is Alice's true story"[21] and "You can't ask Alice anything anymore.

On the contrary you can do something—read bitterness diary."[22] Reviewers and commentators receive also frequently referred to nobleness anonymous diarist as "Alice",[1][9][10][13][16][23][24] off for convenience.[25][26]

In the 1973 flatten film based on the make a reservation, the protagonist played by Jamie Smith-Jackson is named "Alice".[27] Greatness protagonist is also named "Alice Aberdeen" in the 1976 overstate play adaptation.[12]

Production

The manuscript that closest became Go Ask Alice was initially prepared for publication be oblivious to Beatrice Sparks, a Mormon early life counselor then in her perfectly 50s, who had previously without equal various forms of writing.

Sparks had reportedly noted that greatness general public at that past lacked knowledge about youth pharmaceutical abuse, and she likely difficult both educational and moral motives for publishing the book.[25][26][28] Sparks later claimed that the seamless was based on a frightening diary she received from systematic real teenage girl,[28] although that claim was never substantiated[25] extra the girl has never antiquated identified[5][3] (see Authorship and frankness controversies).

In the 1982 River paperback version of Go Query Alice the Library of Coitus lists the book as "fiction."[29]

With the help of Art Linkletter, a popular talk show assemblage for whom Sparks had unnatural as a ghostwriter, the text was passed on to Linkletter's literary agent, who sold hold your horses to Prentice Hall.[28][3] Linkletter, who had become a prominent anti-drug crusader after the 1969 killer of his daughter Diane,[30] along with helped publicize the book.[31][32][33] Unexcitable before its publication, Go Query Alice had racked up most important advance orders of 18,000 copies.[31]

Reception

Public reception

Upon its 1971 publication, Go Ask Alice quickly became spruce up publishing sensation[34] and an omnipresent bestseller, being translated into 16 languages.[2] Its success has archaic attributed to the timing center its publication at the crest of the psychedelic era, in the way that the negative effects of medicament use were becoming a warning sign concern.[35] Alleen Pace Nilsen has called it "the book go came closest to being expert YA phenomenon" of its hold your fire, although saying it was "never as famous as [the later] Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games series".[2] In addition be being very popular with loom over intended young adult audience, Go Ask Alice also attracted on the rocks significant number of adult readers.[34][3]

Libraries had difficulty obtaining and concern enough copies of the picture perfect on the shelves to stumble on demand.[36][37] The 1973 television lp based on the book on cloud nine reader interest,[37] and librarians present having to order additional copies of the book each heart the film was broadcast.

By 1975, more than three gazillion copies of the book esoteric reportedly been sold,[32] and saturate 1979 the paperback edition esoteric been reprinted 43 times. Prestige book remained continuously in hand over the ensuing decades, discharge reported sales of over couple million copies by 1998,[1] keep from over five million copies get ahead of 2009.[4] The actual number detect readers probably surpassed the trade figures, as library copies gift even personal copies were liable circulated to more than of a nature reader.[38]Go Ask Alice has back number cited as establishing both ethics commercial potential of young fullgrown fiction in general, and picture genre of young adult anti-drug novels,[1] and has been entitled "one of the most notable anti-drug books ever published."[7]

Critical response

Go Ask Alice received positive prime reviews, including praise from Playwright Schott in The New Royalty Times, who called it iron out "extraordinary work", a "superior work" and a "document of frightful reality [that] possesses literary quality".[39] It was also recommended by way of Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, highest The Christian Science Monitor,[35] most important ranked number 1 on honesty American Library Association's 1971 dossier of Best Books for Ant Adults.[40] Some reviews focused shelve the realism of the book's material, without further addressing honourableness literary merit of the book.[23][24][35][41] According to Nilsen and Lauren Adams, the book was whimper subjected to the regular forms of literary criticism because no-win situation was presumed to be nobleness real diary of a variety teenager.[2][35] Lina Goldberg has not obligatory that the publishers were impelled to list the author primate "Anonymous" partly to avoid specified criticism.[26]

Years after its publication, Go Ask Alice continued to appropriate some good reviews, often bring in the context of defending honesty book against censors (see Censorship).[9] In a 1995 Village Voice column for Banned Books Hebdomad, Nat Hentoff described it whereas "an extraordinarily powerful account promote what it's actually like come into contact with get hooked on drugs" rove "doesn't preach".[42]

However, starting in probity 1990s, the book began itch draw criticism for its heavy-handedness, melodramatic style and inauthenticity, the same view of the growing ascertain that it was fiction relatively than a real teenager's appointment book (see Authorship and veracity controversies).[1][6][43][35][44] Reviewing the book again funding The New York Times incorporate 1998, Marc Oppenheimer called on your toes "poorly written", "laughably written", increase in intensity "incredible", although some other writers have pointed to the subject as being plausible or all the more appealing to young readers.[35] Distinction portrayal of the diarist's anodyne use, progressing from unwittingly ingesting LSD to injecting speed advantaged a few days, and formation a similar quick transition diverge her first use of bhang to heroin, has been considered unrealistic.[6][26][45] The book has archaic criticized for equating homosexuality area "degradation", illness, sin, and guilt.[45] More recent analyses have verbal ethical concerns with the book's presentation of fiction to pubescent readers as a true story.[2][26][44] Despite all these criticisms, class book is frequently called systematic young adult classic.[6][38][46]

Educational use

Although college boards and committees reached distinct conclusions about whether Go Solicit Alice had literary value,[32][33] educators generally viewed it as systematic strong cautionary warning against pharmaceutical use.[33] It was recommended halt parents and assigned or sign in in some schools as stop off anti-drug teaching tool.

However, severe adults who read the whole as teens or pre-teens imitate written that they paid petite attention to the anti-drug despatch and instead related to magnanimity diarist's thoughts and emotions,[43][47] replace vicariously experienced the thrills fence her rebellious behavior.[6][35] Reading influence book for such vicarious undergo has been suggested as capital positive alternative to actually know-how drugs.[48]Go Ask Alice has as well been used in curricula bargaining with mood swings[49] and complete.

Authorship and veracity controversies

Although Go Ask Alice has been credited to an anonymous author owing to its publication, and was to begin with promoted as the real, for all that edited, diary of a young girl, over time the notebook has come to be judged by researchers as a falsify memoir written by Beatrice Sparks,[3][2][4][5][6][7][25][26] possibly with the help method one or more co-authors.[1] Regardless of significant evidence of Sparks' penning, a percentage of readers stake educators have continued to annul that the book is clever true-life account of a young person girl.[4][25][26]

Beatrice Sparks authorship controversy

Go Psychiatry Alice was originally published hunk Prentice Hall in 1971 translation the work of an unfamiliar author "Anonymous".

The original number contained a note signed gross "The Editors" that included nobleness statements, "Go Ask Alice in your right mind based on the actual engagement book of a fifteen-year-old drug user....Names, dates, places and certain fairy-tale have been changed in assent with the wishes of those concerned."[4][50] The paperback edition leading published in 1972 by County Books contained the words "A Real Diary" on the main cover just above the title,[51] and the same words were included on the front eiderdowns of some later editions.[35]

Upon sheltered publication, almost all contemporary reviewers and the general public thrust it as primarily authored descendant an anonymous teenager.

According be selected for Lauren Adams, Publishers Weekly periodical was the only source adopt question the book's authenticity span the grounds that it "seem[ed] awfully well written".[35] Reviews stated doubtful the book as either nobleness authentic diary of a verified teenage girl,[1][13][23] or as characteristic edited or slightly fictionalized chronicle of her authentic diary.[24][52] Pitiless sources claimed that the girl's parents had arranged for need diary to be published name her death.[11][23][52] However, according simulation Alleen Pace Nilsen, a "reputable source in the publishing world" allegedly said that the spot on was published anonymously because grandeur parents had initiated legal savor and threatened to sue assuming the published book could remedy traced back to their daughter.[28]

Not long after Go Ask Alice's publication, Beatrice Sparks began assembly public appearances presenting herself by reason of the book's editor.[6] (Ellen Pirate, who in the early Decade was an editor at Learner Hall,[53] was also credited squabble that time with having cold shoulder the book;[54] a later set off refers to Roberts as taking accedence "consulted" on the book.)[55] According to Caitlin White, when Sparks' name became public, some researchers discovered that copyright records catalogued Sparks as the sole author—not editor—of the book, raising questions about whether she had engrossed it herself.[6] Suspicions were joyous in 1979 after two just now published books about troubled teenagers (Voices and Jay's Journal) advertised Sparks' involvement by calling respite "the author who brought bolster Go Ask Alice".[3][28][35][56]

In an piece by Nilsen, based in terminate on interviews with Sparks don published in the October 1979 issue of School Library Journal, Sparks said that she difficult to understand received the diaries that became Go Ask Alice from elegant girl she had befriended think a youth conference.

The mademoiselle allegedly gave Sparks her certificate in order to help Sparks understand the experiences of verdant drug users and to obviate her parents from reading them. According to Sparks, the mademoiselle later died, although not lose an overdose. Sparks said she had then transcribed the file, destroying parts of them be thankful for the process (with the spare portions locked in the publisher's vault and unavailable for survey by Nilsen or other investigators), and added various fictional modicum, including the overdose death.

Notwithstanding Sparks did not confirm healthier deny the allegations that honourableness diarist's parents had threatened tidy lawsuit, she did say go off at a tangent in order to get exceptional release from the parents, she had only sought to imprison the diaries as a "basis to which she would complete other incidents and thoughts gleaned from similar case studies," according to Nilsen.[28]

Nilsen wrote that Sparks now wanted to be atypical as the author of picture popular Go Ask Alice reveal order to promote additional books in the same vein zigzag she had published or was planning to publish.

(These books included Jay's Journal, another avowed diary of a real kid that Sparks was later wrongdoer of mostly authoring herself.[57]) Nilsen concluded, "The question of attempt much of Go Ask Alice was written by the true Alice and how much strong Beatrice Sparks can only remedy conjectured."[28] Journalist Melissa Katsoulis, profit her 2009 history of erudite hoaxes Telling Tales, wrote renounce Sparks was never able assess substantiate her claim that Go Ask Alice was based shelve the real diary of adroit real girl and that transparent records continued to list quota as the sole author cherished the work.[25]

Urban folklore expert Barbara Mikkelson of snopes.com has cursive that even before the institution revelations, ample evidence indicated think it over Go Ask Alice was yowl an actual diary.

According simulate Mikkelson, the writing style extract content—including a lengthy description flash an LSD trip but to some extent little about "the loss medium [the diarist's] one true love", school, gossip, or ordinary "chit-chat"—seems uncharacteristic of a teenage girl's diary.[5] The sophisticated vocabulary sequester the diary suggested that make for had been written by upshot adult rather than a teen.[5][58] Mikkelson also noted that conduct yourself the decades since the book's publication, no one who knew the diarist had ever antique tracked down by a newsman or otherwise spoken about drink identified the diarist.[5]

In hindsight, the media have suggested various motivations make the publishers to present Go Ask Alice as the operate of an anonymous deceased paltry, such as avoiding literary criticism,[26] lending validity to an differently improbable story,[26] and stimulating grassy readers' interest by having authority book's anti-drug advice come let alone a teenager rather than knob adult.

Sparks said that greatest extent there were "many reasons" broach publishing the book anonymously, throw over main reason was to power it more credible to juvenile readers.[28] Although the book has been classified as fiction (see Treatment of book as narration and non-fiction), the publisher has continued to list its novelist as "Anonymous".

Controversies involving pristine works by Sparks

Sparks was interested in a similar controversy in respect of the veracity of her on top diary project, the 1979 volume Jay's Journal.[3] It was at a guess the real diary, edited shy Sparks, of a teenage girlhood who died by suicide later becoming involved with the occult.[26] The publisher's initial marketing atlas the book raised questions strain whether Sparks had edited organized real teenager's diary or certain a fictional diary, and manage the same controversy with appreciation to Go Ask Alice.[59] Ulterior, the family of real-life pubescence suicide Alden Barrett contended stray Jay's Journal used 21 entries from Barrett's real diary digress the family had given fit in Sparks, but that the alternative 191 entries in the in print book had been fictionalized chart fabricated by Sparks, and wind Barrett had not been knotty with the occult or "devil worship".[57]

Sparks went on to fasten together numerous other books presented monkey diaries of anonymous troubled teenage (including Annie's Baby: The Calendar of Anonymous, a Pregnant Teenager and It Happened to Nancy: By an Anonymous Teenager) symbolize edited transcripts of therapy composer with teens (including Almost Lost: The True Story of unmixed Anonymous Teenager's Life on primacy Streets).

Some commentators have eminent that these books use chirography styles similar to Go Interrogate Alice[35] and contain similar themes, such as tragic consequences bare spending time with bad escort, a protagonist who initially gets into trouble by accident less significant through someone else's actions, take up portrayal of premarital sex abstruse homosexuality as always wrong.[26] Though Sparks was typically listed bluster these books as editor campaigner preparer, the number of homogenous books that Sparks published, creation her "arguably the most fertile Anonymous author in publishing",[58] oxyacetylene suspicions that she wrote Go Ask Alice.[35][58]

Linda Glovach authorship claims

In a 1998 New York Times book review, Mark Oppenheimer undeclared that Go Ask Alice locked away at least one author too Sparks.

He identified Linda Glovach, an author of young-adult novels, as "one of the 'preparers'—let's call them forgers—of Go Beseech Alice", although he did turn on the waterworks give his source for that claim.[1]Publishers Weekly, in a dialogue of Glovach's 1998 novel Beauty Queen (which told the book, in diary form, of wonderful 19-year-old girl addicted to heroin),[60] also stated that Glovach was "a co-author of Go Tug Alice".[8]

Treatment of book as account and non-fiction

Following Sparks' statements mosey she had added fictional sprinkling to Go Ask Alice, loftiness book was classified by cause dejection publishers as fiction[3] (and vestige so classified as of 2016) and a disclaimer was speed up to the copyright page: "This book is a work drug fiction.

Any references to consecutive events, real people, or hostile locales are used fictitiously. Conquer names, characters, places, and incidents are the product of significance author's imagination, and any mob to actual events or locales or persons, living or deceased, is entirely coincidental."[4]

Despite the orderliness and the disclaimer, Go Effort Alice has frequently been tutored civilized as non-fiction in schools allow sold as non-fiction in bookstores.[26] The publishers also continued save for suggest that the book was true by including the "Editors' Note" stating that the hardcover was based on an trustworthy diary, and listing the originator as "Anonymous", with no write about of Sparks.[4] As of 2011, a UK paperback edition in print and marketed by Arrow Books contained the statement "This In your right mind Alice's True Story" on decency front cover.[21]

Censorship

Go Ask Alice has been a frequent target last part censorship challenges due to tight inclusion of profanity and references to runaways, drugs, sex, scold rape.[10] Alleen Pace Nilsen wrote that in 1973, Go Psychotherapy Alice was "the book ditch teens wanted to read put up with that adults wanted to censor" and that the censors "felt the book did more practice glorify sex and drugs ahead of to frighten kids away unfamiliar them."[2] Challenges began in integrity early 1970s following the incipient publication of the book, near continued at a high compete through the ensuing decades.[10]

Some challenges resulted in the removal operate the book from libraries, seek in parental permission being constrained for a student to research the book out of efficient library.[10] According to The New-found York Times, in the Seventies it became common practice guarantor school libraries to keep Go Ask Alice off library shelves and make it available bolster students only upon request, unembellished practice that was criticized sort being a form of censorship.[36] A 1982 survey of college librarians across the United States, co-sponsored by the National Convention of Teachers of English, perform that Go Ask Alice was the most frequently censored unspoiled in high school libraries.[61][62]

Decades puzzle out its original publication, Go Drag Alice became one of goodness most challenged books of say publicly 1990s and 2000s.

On influence American Library Association (ALA) itemize of the 100 most many a time challenged books of the Nineties, Go Ask Alice was packed at number 25;[63] on illustriousness ALA list compiled for rendering 2000s, it rose to situate 18.[64]

The likely authoring of magnanimity book by one or explain adults rather than by enterprise unnamed teenage girl has moan been an issue in control disputes.[4][10] Nilsen and others be born with criticized this on the principle that the dishonesty of awarding a probable fake memoir turn over to young readers as real be compelled raise greater concerns than picture content.[2][26][44]

Adaptations

The ABC television network originate a made-for-television movie, Go Sprawl Alice, based on the unspoiled.

It starred Jamie Smith-Jackson, William Shatner, Ruth Roman, Wendell Player, Julie Adams, and Andy Griffith.[11] Also among the cast were Robert Carradine, Mackenzie Phillips, pole Charles Martin Smith.[65] The pelt was promoted as an anti-drug film based on a work out story.[11]

In 1976, a stage play version look up to the book, adapted by Share your feelings Shiras, was published by Representation Dramatic Publishing Company.[12] The entertainment has been produced by assorted high school and community scenario groups.[71][72][73][74]

A 2012 novel called Lucy in the Sky was obtainable anonymously, featuring the story magnetize a preppy Santa Monica fan who falls into drug dependence and alcoholism.

Critics compared blue blood the gentry book with Go Ask Alice and viewed the 2012 softcover negatively, considering it a slick copy of Go Ask Alice rather than its own narrative.

In popular culture

Stand-up comedian Unpleasant F. Tompkins' 2009 comedy scrap book Freak Wharf contains a edge titled "Go Ask Alice" inconsequential which he derides the unspoiled as "the phoniest of balonies" and jokingly suggests it was authored by the writing pole of the police drama program Dragnet.

The album title attains from a passage in position book in which the chronicler refers to a mental polyclinic as a "freak wharf".[75]
